my good friend, steve richardson, runs a charity in long beach called
i love what they do because they take meals to the homeless, instead of making them come to a central location
this particular day was thanksgiving, so feed lb was picking up their usual clients and bringing them to a thanksgiving dinner
i only took a couple of shots when we drove out to feed the clients who were still at their own locations.
(you see – it can be risky to leave their belongings. despite the obvious fear of theft, their entire living area can be razed by the police at any time, and all of their personal belongings and keepsakes of distant lives will lie in a broken pile to be taken to the city dump.)
i did not want to take the camera out where they live, yet.
for that, i think a personal relationship is required so it is a mutual relationship… not just me trying to get pictures of someone’s misery for dramatic effect
i have a project starting soon with feed long beach that will involve my getting to know some of the participants in their program that moves homeless residents of long beach into apartments
it’s a great program, and i’m really excited about this upcoming project
